This is worth picking up for players and DMs for the additional character options. The additional spells and and magic items are nice to have as well.

4.5 stars. The D&D 5E line continues to impress. This book expands substanstially on the core rules, but manages to (mostly) avoid power-creep, and feels useful as a great supplement/ add-on to most campaigns.
And I enjoy the snarky asides from the titular character sprinkled throughout the book.
The 1st real expansion of 5e was a quick read, but only because it cut straight to the point. New class options, new DM tools, new RP options, new spells, new feats, etc. No stone left unturned, as they say.
At the heart of things, I was really only interested in a few spells, as the Core books for 5e we're exceptionally well rounded and left little else to be desired, on my end, both as a player and a DM. Still Xanathar's is a solid addition to those rules, and I feel could help others who might..more

Truly an epic addition to 5e DnD. This makes generating a character for a first time player (or veteran) even easier. The layout of the book and the charts are just well placed and though out. Allowing players to create a well rounded character via dice rolls if they want. This provides a much faster path to filling in a characters back story or at least provides you with enough starting points to round them out with greater ease.
It even has a section that helps you generate a freaking name for..more

A major expansion for the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition game, Xanathar's Guide to Everything has a ton of new options for players and Dungeon Masters to use in their campaigns. Similar to 5E itself, much of the material in Xanathar's was publicly playtested at length before being published, as part of the Unearthed Arcana column on the D&D web site. Similar to Volo's Guide to Monsters, this book has the conceit of being narrated by the Xanathar, a beholder crime lord from the Forgotten..more
As a player, I mostly wanted a compendium of new spells and sweet new classes. This book offers some thoughtful lower level spells and additions for some of the more boring classes (i.e. fighter)
I find a lot of the book’s additions such as a list of minor magical items and role playing ideas to not be as interesting to me.
A slightly random grabbag of improvements to 5e. A lot of the new subclasses are seem very fun, and definitely things that I'd want to play. The really useful parts of this, however, are definitely the DM improvements. There are lots of improvements to rules that I've worried about: how to allocate magic items without just using the random tables, and rules for tool proficiencies, which otherwise seem to do almost nothing for most of the game.

There isn't much of a coherent theme to this supplement — it's a grab bag of new character options and optional rules for the Dungeon Master, much like the old Best of Dragon Magazine books — but there's probably something here to appeal to everybody. Production values are high and the color commentary from the eponymous Xanathar is amusing.
The jokes are bad, but that's not why you read this book. :P

This is a great supplement with useful additions for all classes and DMs.
Not needed to play or run a good story. But has some neat Archetypes and other things for creating characters

I've said before that the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons has greatly benefited from the Wizards RPG Team's having released a comparative minimum of new rulebooks for D&D, particularly, as compared with fourth edition, and third and 3.5 to a lesser extent. To that effect, Xanathar's Guide To Everything—amazingly enough, only the third book of new rules in at least as many years—fulfills the adage that less is more, insofar as the new rules provided therein bolster and supplement thos..more

Good additional information that actually helps new players develop backgrounds and story for their characters. Nice supplement to the core book.
For players, I think this book could be a useful addition. It adds several options for character creation that might appeal as new ways to play as well as new backgrounds to draw on. It doesn't feel as massive as, say, prestige classes from 3rd edition rulebooks, but it's fun to see the Kensei and Arcane Archer again.
As a DM, I feel like I didn't get as much out of it. By far, the most useful part was on traps: I admittedly had been de-prioritizing traps in my dungeon design since they didn't ad..more
This companion book fixes the mistakes and omissions of the core D&D books, and does it with style. Virtually everything is a set of randomized tables, allowing you to create vaguely believable fantasy backstories, arm wrestling contests, or deadly traps in minutes. Formerly ornamental things like 'proficiency in brewer's supplies' now have delightful abilities attached, like '+5 to holding your liquor'. New characters have a ton of fun, flavorful options, from the anime monk who fires tiny..more
XGE is a non-core sourcebook for 5th Edition D&D that was just released in November 2017. Despite being totally optional, I think it's fantastic--I'd recommend getting it before the Dungeon Master's Guide (although the magic item list is important, there's a pretty decent list in the freely available System Reference Document). It has a bunch of optional class archetypes and spells. But the most compelling part for me is the 'This Is Your Life' section, which has a lot of aids for fleshing o..more

Glad to see many of the touch ups they did for the Subclasses, some really needed a polish. But was disappointed to see so many re-prints from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. Why were they included? Takes away from the value of that book.
Could have done without a table of names for real world places, and include more tables for the fantasy setting. Where's the Drow names for example? The tool section was a great addition. Explaining more clearly what can be done with them as the PHB was majorly..more

It had some great stuff and in a away with all the tables to choose from it felt a little like the first AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide. The Appendices for sure.

This is what a D&D supplement should be. The wealth of new material, and how to best use it, is perfect for both players and GMs alike. Anybody playing D&D could make use of this book, but it's not essential to keeping up with some kind of power creep. There's none of that here.

This is a pretty decent D&D sourcebook. I enjoyed the way it was laid out, with little comments from 'the author', the titular Xanathar, and I especially like the background and name generator sections. I am sad that they didn't include the Sword Coast sourcebook spells (as they did with the Elemental Evil ones), especially since a number of the class archetypes from there are replicated here. An excellent addition to the D&D manuals, mainly for the new subclasses it offers, bringing more variety and more chances to build an interesting backstory and roleplay. The other sections were nice as well, but the new subclasses are the main attraction for me. This will definitely help me build a few characters, and then hopefully I will soon find a group to play with and actually delve into Dungeons & Dragons properly.
I was a bit less fond of the little notes by the Xanathar, though,..more

A guide to everything indeed. This book includes many sub-classes for each class, as well as additional backstory elements for them. It includes a few new racially restricted feats, and a wealth of DM tools, including some new magic items, new ways to use tool proficiencies, and some very handy charts.
Xanathar has a lot less to say than Volo, and what he does say isn't nearly as interesting, but the content of this book is fabulous.
I read this from the library, and really liked it, but I wouldn't have if i would have paid full retail.
Great supplement for both players and DMs of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition. Everything is brilliant and helpful - especially the encounter generation tables for both medium time and short time circumstances.
I only give it 4/5 stars because it still lacks something I think is fundamental: what CR does a player’s level equal to, and 4-5 classes are carbon-copies from Adventures’ Guide to the Sword Coast supplement. Apart from this, it’s a great supplement and a book that is a ‘must have’ even f..more

4 & 1/2 really. Lots of great stuff here, especially in the background and class option areas. Common magical items are just the perfect treats without being unbalancing. The downtime section might prove problematic with power gamers. Biggest complaint, random tables for encounters, ugh.

Very good stuff! I'm not personaly excited to try many (if any) of the new subclasses, but I'm glad it is out! The DM tools are amazing though. Tables to roll and much more!

For anyone else who played AD&D back in the day, remember how excited you were when TSR released Unearthed Arcana? Well, this is the modern equivalent!
(A note on accuracy of above statement, Wizards runs an Unearthed Arcana site where they post rules that are still in test. Want to play a Centaur? There's a guide there!) First off, this book opens with new character class options - for example, there are examples for the Fighter class for Heraldic Signs, Instructors, and Signature (fighting)..more
This is a very handy supplement/expansion to the core rules of D&D fifth edition and I would recommend that every gaming group get at least one copy, if only for the expanded character subclass options available in the first chapter. This is the meat of the book and will open up character creation immensely, and I have personal experience DMing and playing as two of the new archetypes specifically introduced for the Rogue - the Inquisitive (a fantasy Sherlock Holmes) and the Mastermind (a ch..more

I had doubts about listing D&D books for this, but I did spend so much time reading these ones that I didn't have time to read more other books and it seems stupid not to include them to reflect that. The rating, always kind of imprecise, is more just me noting how much I/we have actually used them when playing than any sort of referendum on fantasy, pen and paper RPGs, D&D, 5E, or whatever. In this case one of my PCs is playing one of the monk varients in here (the sun soul), I can see..more
